Nicholas Evennett

General and Upper GI, Bariatric Surgeon
MD MBChB BHB PCHE FRACS

Nicholas is a New Zealand–trained Upper GI and Bariatric Surgeon with a particular interest in complex upper gastrointestinal surgery, revision procedures, and minimally invasive techniques. His practice spans both public and private healthcare, with consultant roles at Auckland City Hospital and Ascot Hospital, where he cares for patients with a broad range of upper gastrointestinal conditions — from common laparoscopic procedures to complex oesophageal and gastric surgery. He is particularly passionate about delivering thoughtful, patient-centred care while applying advanced surgical techniques to achieve the best possible outcomes.

After completing his MBChB in 2002 with first-class academic results, Nicholas undertook further training and research in Europe and the UK, completing a Doctor of Medicine (MD) in London focused on novel markers of intestinal injury, alongside postgraduate training in healthcare education. Returning to New Zealand, he completed his FRACS in General Surgery in 2012, followed by advanced post-fellowship training in Upper GI and Bariatric Surgery, including the AANZGOSA programme.

In 2015, Nicholas completed further subspecialty training at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, where he developed expertise in minimally invasive oesophagectomy — a technique he later helped introduce in New Zealand. Since 2016, he has worked as a consultant surgeon at Auckland City Hospital, New Zealand’s principal tertiary referral centre, alongside his private practice.

Q&A with Nicholas

What do you enjoy most about your work?

I enjoy guiding patients through the entire surgical journey — from diagnosis and decision-making, through surgery itself, to recovery and longer-term follow-up. That continuity of care allows me to build trusted relationships with patients and to see the real improvements surgery can make to their health and quality of life. Surgery is a significant event for most people, often accompanied by uncertainty or anxiety, so helping patients feel informed, reassured, and comfortable throughout the process is incredibly important to me. I believe that taking the time to listen, explain things clearly, and provide consistent care helps create a much better experience for patients.

What areas of care are you particularly focused on?

My particular area of expertise is upper gastrointestinal surgery, with a focus on both benign and malignant oesophageal and gastric conditions. This includes anti-reflux surgery, large hiatus hernias, bariatric surgery, gallbladder disease, and the surgical management of oesophageal and gastric cancer. I have a strong interest in minimally invasive and advanced laparoscopic techniques, but just as importantly, in helping patients understand complex diagnoses and treatment options so they feel informed and supported throughout their care.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Outside of work, you’re just as likely to find me behind a drum kit as in an operating theatre. Music has long been a passion of mine and provides a great creative counterbalance to the focus and discipline of surgery. I also enjoy time with my family and keeping active.
