Q&A with Adam

What do you enjoy most about your work?

I enjoy helping patients understand what’s going on and guiding them through what can often be a stressful and uncertain time. Surgery can feel daunting, and being able to bring clarity, structure, and reassurance to that process is one of the most rewarding parts of the job.

What is most important to you when caring for patients?

Clear, honest communication is key. I want patients to feel they understand their diagnosis, the options available, and what to expect from treatment and recovery, so they can make decisions with confidence.

How do you help patients feel comfortable during a procedure?

Preparation is critical. I spend time beforehand explaining the procedure in a straightforward way, using diagrams and making sure patients know what to expect. That understanding tends to reduce anxiety and helps them feel more in control.

What areas of care are you particularly focused on?

My main focus is on liver, pancreas, and biliary conditions, including both benign and malignant disease, as well as minimally invasive hernia surgery. I work closely within multidisciplinary teams to ensure patients receive coordinated, evidence-based care.

How do you like to spend your time away from the clinic?

I enjoy spending time outdoors with family, particularly around the water or exploring different parts of New Zealand. Staying active is important to me, and it helps maintain balance alongside clinical work.
